If you want to do things properly, there's no way around paying for your domain. Mine is DavesComputers.co.uk and I registered it with 123Reg. Yours can be anything that isn't already registered and can end in a variety of ways such as .com and .net, each varying in price. You will however, be surprised to find how little it will cost you to have your own domain. They also offer some great all in one packages so that you can buy your domain, design your site and host it all in one place. Click here or try a search for your own domain below to check them out.
Once you have a web host and domain registered, you'll want to start uploading your files. Most hosts will allow you to do this through a browser window, but this takes time and can be unreliable. The professional way to do it is via an FTP client. Your web host will give you FTP connection instructions such as address, username and password. You'll then need the client application. There aren't many free applications that will do this, but the one I reccommend is free for personal use and for small organisations. It's called CoreFTP Click here to visit the website and download.
This 'site' will not only give you the basic tools and web space you'll need to set up a basic site, but it will also allow you to set up email addresses to your own domain for free. I used it to create my Dave@davescomputers.co.uk email address as it saves me the money that I'd otherwise have to pay my domain provider.
